SINGAPORE - 9 JULY 2024 - Sydrogen Energy Pte. Ltd. (Sydrogen), a Singapore-based fuel cell components and systems company, today announced its entry into the maritime market with a 250 kW fuel cell power module. Developed in an exclusive collaboration signed today with Shanghai Hydrogen Propulsion Technology Co., Ltd. (SHPT), this breakthrough system aims to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen technology in the shipping industry, supporting Singapore's ambitious maritime decarbonisation goals.

The global maritime industry is at a pivotal juncture, facing increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint with calls from the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to accelerate its transition to cleaner energy sources. Singapore, as a leading maritime hub, has set ambitious goals to decarbonise its maritime sector, aiming to achieve net-zero by 2050 and to have all new harbour craft operating in the Port of Singapore from 2030 to be fully electric, be capable of using B100 biofuel or be compatible with net-zero fuels. These ambitious goals are achievable and require the joint investment by various stakeholders in the value chain to create the necessary infrastructure and innovative solutions.

TEO Eng Dih, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), commented on the launch: "Through a slew of initiatives both on shore, and at sea, the MPA is working towards the digitalisation and decarbonisation of the global maritime community. We are heartened to see local companies such as Sydrogen making bold strides in developing innovative technologies that can enable vessel builders with more options to accelerate our energy transition goals collectively."

This innovative 250 kW hydrogen fuel cell power module, incorporating advanced cooling systems, is scalable from kW to MW for large and small vessels, and capable of accepting reformed fuels. Developed in Singapore for the international market, this maritime fuel cell power module will convert hydrogen from various sources and produce clean electricity without carbon emissions. This represents a significant milestone in the company's growth journey and a broader industry's shift towards clean energy.

The system, slated for market readiness in 2025, will undergo rigorous type approval certification with Classification Societies to ensure compliance with maritime standards. At the heart of this innovative solution is Sydrogen's proprietary metal bipolar plate technology, SydroDIAMOND®, which offers durable, high-performing components for the fuel cell stack. The technology is expected to significantly enhance the longevity and efficiency of maritime fuel cell systems.

As part of its commitment to the local market, Sydrogen is actively collaborating with Singapore shipbuilders to deploy this technology, contributing to the nation's green shipping initiatives in a globally connected maritime industry. In addition, this system will be globally marketed by Sydrogen to support the needs of vessel builders in Asia and globally.

LU Bingbing, General Manager of SHPT, added: "The global maritime industry is a large attractive one and in need of new hydrogen-based solutions to enable its transition to cleaner fuels. We believe that through the combined technological strength and market reach of Sydrogen and SHPT, we will create attractive and advanced fuel cell systems for the global maritime market."

With this new additional product offering, Sydrogen will be expanding its offering in the fuel cell space from a pure component supplier to a provider of a completed product ready for use in the maritime industry. GIAN Yi-Hsen, CEO of Sydrogen shared, “The vision of Sydrogen is to accelerate the energy transition process by provision of various offerings leveraging our deep tech expertise in different stages of the hydrogen value chain thereby realising our hydrogen future, today. This will be the first of several products that will bring Sydrogen into different new segments and markets.”
